An adaptation of six Japanese literary works by famous authors:
No Longer Human (Ningen Shikaku) and Run, Melos! (Hashire, Melos) by Osamu Dazai,
Kokoro by Natsume Souseki,
Hell Screen (Jigoku Hen) and The Spider's Thread (Kumo no Ito) by Ryunosuke Akutagawa
and In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom (Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita) by Ango Sakaguchi.

Manga artists Takeshi Obata (Death Note), Takeshi Konomo (Prince of Tennis), and Tite Kubo (Bleach) will be involved with the production.

A deadly virus known as "Algernon" has attacked humanity with vicious meaning. A light in the sky, followed by a strange aura and grisly murders. Each character tells their own connection to the event and to a similar murder spree five years ago. All of the different stories are slowly tied together by seemingly minute similarities and the story of Boogiepop is unraveled.

The original game's premise revolves around a high school student, Takumi Nishijō, who unknowingly walks into the scene of a gruesome murder on his way home. More mysterious events starts happening afterwards as more gruesome murders occurs in the area. Takumi struggles to cope with reality and the delusions he experiences as he tries to avoid being getting caught by the perpetrator behind the chain of murders.

Limited editions of volumes 15 and 16 of Kôji Kumeta's Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei manga in Japan will bundle original animation DVDs (OADs) along with a release in between the manga releases.

The first OAD will ship with the limited edition of Volume 15 for 3,470 yen on October 17. (The numbers 3, 4, 7, and 0 can be phonetically pronounced in Japanese as "Sa-yo-na-ra.") It is the year After Colony 195, and war between the Space Colonies and Earth has begun. Ai Enma once again returns as the Jigoku Shoujo, who uses Jigoku Tsuushin (Hell Hotline) to allow people to post their grudges on their tormentors, sending them straight to Hell.
